Nicole Deyo
Nicole Deyo is the Founder and Executive Director of Bending the Bars, a criminal justice reform organization based in Richmond, Virginia. Her work is rooted in personal experience and a deep commitment to advocating for those impacted by incarceration.
After witnessing systemic barriers and experiencing loss tied to failures within the prison system, Nicole turned her pain into purpose, building an organization focused on reentry support, advocacy, and real second chances.
Through her leadership, Bending the Bars continues to create pathways for change, restore hope, and fight for justice both inside and outside prison walls.

Vice President & Community Outreach
Mahogani Moore
Mahogani Moore serves as the Vice President and Community Outreach Coordinator for Bending the Bars. She is deeply committed to creating impactful social-emotional learning opportunities that empower youth and strengthen communities.
With a passion for prevention and transformation, Mahogani leads outreach efforts and youth-centered initiatives focused on mentorship, development, and long-term success. Her work is rooted in addressing and reducing the school-to-prison pipeline by equipping young people with the tools, support, and guidance needed to thrive.

Financial Director & Grant Writer
Vernetta Winston
Vernetta “Vee” Winston serves as the Funding Director and Grant Writer for Bending the Bars, where she leads the organization’s funding strategy and financial growth initiatives.
With a proven track record of securing grant funding for clients, Vee specializes in developing grant-ready programs, identifying strategic funding opportunities, and crafting compelling proposals that drive real impact. Her work ensures that the organization has the resources needed to expand its programs, serve the community effectively, and create sustainable change.
Passionate about second chances and systemic reform, Vee is committed to building pathways for long-term funding while advancing initiatives that support reentry, youth empowerment, and community transformation.

Treasure
Shantel Morgan
Shantel Morgan serves as the Treasurer for Bending the Bars, bringing over 30 years of experience in finance and financial management.
A Virginia native, Shantel provides steady leadership and oversight of the organization’s financial operations, ensuring accountability, transparency, and long-term sustainability. Her extensive background allows her to support strategic decision-making and maintain the financial integrity of the organization.
Shantel’s commitment to the mission is deeply personal. After experiencing the loss of her son’s father during incarceration, she is driven to support efforts that create change within the justice system and provide resources, advocacy, and second chances for impacted individuals and families.
